Sector Training Activities

Where is the Line: Building and Maintaining Professional Relationships

This course is designed for workers in the Disability Sector to help them define, establish and maintain appropriate professional relationships in the workplace.

It provides opportunities for participants to discuss the skills of setting and maintaining professional boundaries and to practice appropriate responses when boundaries are at risk.

If any of the following statements sound familiar, this is the course for you!

  • I get over involved with my clients
  • I have difficulty sleeping when a particular client issue is on my mind
  • I think some of my colleagues are too distant from their clients
  • I am sometimes unsure who my client is
  • I am often torn between the needs of my client, their family, employer and/or my own agency
  • I am sometimes overwhelmed by the expectations placed upon me

 Course Outcomes

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Understand how role theory, conflict and confusion create problems in professional relationships.
  • Understand what action to take when receiving a complaint
  • Be clear about what needs to be dealt with by a more senior worker
  • Define personal and professional boundaries and state how they impact on your role
  • Explore and interpret case examples
  • Develop and practice strategies to avoid crossing the line from the professional to the personal
