Autism - From The Outside In
This 2-day course takes participants through a journey in understanding oneself. It uses that as a foundation to think about interpreting the world from the perspective of people with Autistic Spectrum Conditions. It is packed with experiential learning, real life examples and helps participants understand and feel what it’s like to live with Autism rather than just know the theory.
At the end of this workshop participants will have:
- An understanding of Autism as a “difference” and not a condition.
- Insight into the day to day experiences of people with Autism
- The ability to talk about Autism to ensure their opinion is “credible” in traditional support environments
- Understanding of own processing systems, their strengths and weaknesses, how they affect you and how you affect others
- Understanding of social needs and emotional intelligence and how they impact on you, your colleagues and the people you work with
- Insight into the demands placed on people with Autism daily and the incredible, smart and creative coping strategies people develop in response
- An understanding of a range of support and intervention strategies that are useful in supporting people with Autism and that “one size” won’t fit everyone
- The vital skills, attributes and gifts support workers may choose to bring to their support role
- Understanding of the impact of Autism on relationships and how to modify expectations and support strategies accordingly
