Person Centred Thinking

For people with disabilities and family members, this course can help you organise your thoughts, to think about what supports you want and how you want those supports to work for you.

When receiving support, it is not person centred planning that matters as much as the pervasive presence of person centred thinking.

If people who use services are to have positive control over their lives and if they are to have self directed lives within their own communities, then for those who are around the person, especially those who assist with day to day support, person centred thinking skills are of great benefit. Only a small percentage of people need to know how to write good person centred plans, however everyone involved needs to have good skills in using person centred thinking as well as the values and skills that underlie the planning.

There are a number for this. Teaching and supporting the use of person centred thinking skills will mean that:

  • it is more likely that plans will be used and acted upon,
  • the lives of people who use services will improve,
  • there will be a number of ways to get plans started,
  • updating the plans will occur naturally, needing less effort and time.

People who attend this workshop will be able to:

  • Separate what is Important To someone from what is Important For them.
  • Discover what is working and not working in a situation from different perspectives.
  • Record how the person communicates and how we can communicate with them, via communication charts
  • Identify what are core responsibilities and where you can use creativity and judgement.
  • Mindfully record learning tools such as a Learning Log and 4+1 Questions which help people focus on what has been learned and on future actions and solutions.

Who can attend?  The course is open to service providers, people with disabilities and people who have a family member with a disability. The workshop is conducted in an environment that fosters the sharing of experiences and skills in a confidential, respectful and supportive atmosphere.
