Project launch – making ICT accessible for people with disability
Attend this informative workshop, facilitated by Nigel Phair, Director of Canberra University’s Centre for Internet Safety, to learn more about how to better support people with disability to access the internet and ICTs.
This workshop has been developed in response to the recent NDS WA research project titled ‘Improving internet access for people in supported accommodation’ which was undertaken by NDS in collaboration with people with disability, the WA disability sector, and the Centre for Internet Safety. This research found that:
- many people in supported accommodation do not have access to the internet in their own homes
- there is limited understanding of the potential benefits of access
- people are often reliant on untrained support workers for their access needs and
- despite concerns about risks and the vulnerability of people with disability very few organisations have policies or procedures relating to computer and internet access.
The session will cover:
- The risks associated with internet access
- Launch of basic policies that organisations can adapt and adopt
- Key issues organisations should consider when supporting vulnerable people to access the internet; and
- Knowledge and understanding around internet access within organisations, including legislative requirements.
Who should attend
Coordinators, Team Leaders and Management level staff within disability service organisations – particularly organisations providing accommodation supports.
