Having a greater say in your life through new communication technologies

Communication technologies can assist all of us to get connected, get to know each other and be clearly heard.  This workshop will introduce you to technologies that can help build communication between people who communicate in diverse ways.

 

Technology for Independence—Kelly Moore from the Independent Living Centre will provide an introduction and overview of popular communication technology choices currently available and share stories about people who use them. 

Knowing Me! Communication Tools and Technology—In this presentation, Kelly will explore tools and strategies that help you “get to know someone” such as the Personal Communication Passports.  They enable complex information about a person to be pulled together in a concise and ‘person centered way’.  In addition, Kelly will also explore the use of apps, photos and websites to get to know new people in new environments.

An Introduction to Talking Mats– Julie Tan from Therapy Focus will discuss this unique communication symbols tool.  It uses specially designed picture communication symbols to assist people with communication support needs, and those close to them, by creasing their capacity to communicate effectively about things that matter to them—www.talkingmats.com

An Introduction to Podio—People from Youniverse will share their experience of using Podio to enhance quality support and build connections around a person.  Podio is a cross-platform service, accessible via web browser and additionally through the Podio app,  available for iPhone and Android.  Podio functions like a private intranet, interfaced with a Google Apps service - https://podio.com/
