Sector Training Activities

Promoting and maintaining motivation

The workshop brings together various theories on motivating the seemingly unmotivated and provides a brief background and role play on “Motivational Interviewing”. This workshop focuses on exploring and resolving ambivalence and centres on the motivational processes within the individual that facilitate change. This differs from more coercive or externally driven methods for motivating change as it relies solely on the individual’s own values and concerns in order to move forwards toward a goal.

Topics covered:

  • Understanding of the stages of change. An exploration of the various phases that individuals go through during a state of change.
  • Popular motivational theories. A discussion on various motivational theories, the pros and cons, and how to apply these theories to our work.
  • Brief motivational interviewing. This is a discussion and role play on the applications of “motivational interviewing” and how to use it to motivate individuals to commit to change.

Who should attend:

People in a social/vocational support capacity for people with a disability, such as support workers, employment consultants, family members, and educational staff.
