Certificate III – Residential Aide/Client Assistant/Carer |
The Community Services Training Package sets out the requirements for units of competence for qualifications. Training providers can select from a menu as long as the requirements of the package are met, for example Certificate III Community Services – Disability Work requires the following units:
- 6 Compulsory
- 5 Elective (one of these must be a disability unit)
- 2 Optional

Certificate IV – Social Trainer |
The Community Services Training Package sets out the requirements for units of competence for qualifications. Training providers can select from a menu as long as the requirements of the package are met, for example Certificate IV Community Services – Disability Work requires the following units;
- 9 compulsory
- 4 elective
- 1 optional

- Certificate IV Community Services – Disability Work or qualifications deemed equivalent
- First Aid qualifications (basic/senior)
- Driver's licence A
- Police clearance (federal/state)
- Year 10 or equivalent (Disability Services Commission only)
- Medical (some organisations also have a full functional assessment)

Induction;
- OSH/manual handling
- Medication/care issues
- Communication
- Challenging behaviour
- Passive self-defence/PART
- Values based service delivery (SRV)

There are two levels of induction;
- To the organisation/area of work
- Specific to the individuals the staff will be working with

Residential aide/client assistant/carer
- follows routines and procedures to ensure health and hygiene needs are met
- participates in incidental/informal skills development
- communicates with clients in manner consistent with individual needs
- refers enquiries from families for manager
- maintains a clean and safe environment
- carries out client/group routines which promote a safe, secure and predictable environment
- provides written and verbal information
- carries out training programs to meet individual client needs and reports changes in client behaviour
- communicates, participates and cooperates with the team members to promote team outcomes which enhance service delivery
- actively participates in the acquisition and on going improvement of work skills to enable a high standard of service delivery
Social trainer
- implements health care and safety procedures, identifies and reports on matters related to health care and safety
- contributes to and carries out skills development programs
- communicates with clients in manner consistent with individual needs
- in consultation with line manager provides information and support to clients and families to promote self-advocacy
- maintains a clean and safe environment
- carries out client/group routines which promote a safe, secure and predictable environment
- provides written and verbal information
- carries out skills development programs and reports progress
- Works with team members to promote team outcomes which enhance service
- actively participates in the acquisition and on going improvement of work skills to enable a high standard of service delivery

Social trainer
- participates in meeting individual health care needs and identifying medical problems, and responds to emergencies
- facilitates and promotes opportunities for skill development to enable clients to participate in community life
- identifies communication needs and develops rapport with clients to enhance and facilitate interaction
- compiles and provides information and supports clients and their significant others on external/internal services to promote self-advocacy
- maintains a clean and safe environment
- develops and implements client/group routines that promote a safe, secure and predictable environment
- prepares and presents written and verbal reports to provide accurate and relevant information
- identifies and applies a variety of training methods to maximise training opportunities
- communicates and cooperates with team members to promote team outcomes
- actively participates in the acquisition and on going improvement of work skills to enable a high standard of service delivery
